netbook usage surprising according to lenovo boss
i did an interview with bill amelio, ceo of number 3 pc maker lenovo, this week and it ran in today's paper. with a cv that covers long spells at ibm and dell amelio really knows the pc industry and isn't shy of talking on the topics that interest. on a words per minute basis he was probably one of the most vocal chief execs i've ever encountered.
one interesting titbit that i wasn't able to use in the paper was regarding netbooks, the category of slimmed down sub-€500 rugged pcs that have been popularised by the asus eee pc. amelio said lenovo is actively exploring new categories (such as their rural pc for chinese farmers) but he seemed a little luke-warm on the netbook. he said that research had shown many of the devices had been purchased as gifts and it was questionable whether despite the good sales the products were actually being used.
"I think it's an important [category] to be in but you have to be careful and actually look at who buys them and after you do the experiement you are close enough from a customer intimacy point of view to say what are they actually using it for. Because you will be surprised the intended use might be different than what actually happens. And if you don't catch that change that has occured you are not going to be revving that next product that's going to be a winner for you. We're all watching carefully because this could be the next explosive product."
I think he's off the mark then. I had a two week trial of the Asus EeePC and it was without doubt the single most exciting new piece of technology I've played with in years. It's difficult to understand until you've used it for a while but the EeePC hits a bullseye on the sweetspot between size, price and power. In particular the size makes it an incredibly portable device, an order of magnitude more so than most laptops. I ended up taking and using the EeePC in places I'd never take or use my Dell laptop, including the breakfast table and bedside locker.
My enthusiasm for the device rubbed off on the headmaster of Gaelscoil O'Doghair in Co. Limerick, widely recognized as Ireland's most technologically advance primary school. They put in an order for 15 'pilot' units but could only get 6 due to the backlog on orders. Other educators I know, such as John Jennings at Tipperary Institute, will also testify that the EeePC is a truly groundbreaking computer.

I just filled in a questionnaire and selected a payment method and before I knew it I was ready to decide and enter the selected delivery location, which I decided would be my home.
