intel's irish operations play key role in 80-core chip demo
with continued speculation about the commitment of some of the multinational high-tech companies to their irish operations, it is good to see that intel ireland played an important role in intel's recent demo of an 80-core chip. the teraflop chip (capable of 1 trillion calculations) shown in california was actually fabricated at the intel ireland campus in leixlip by local engineers. it is in effect a supercomputer on a single chip.
according to the release from intel ireland "This piece of silicon delivers supercomputer-like performance from a single chip, not much larger than the size of a finger nail while using less electricity than most of today’s home appliances."
"This is an exciting breakthrough for the team here in Ireland," said paul donovan, design to silicon manager, with intel ireland. “We were delighted to be able to work with the Intel R&D teams to translate their research designs into actual silicon prototypes that will potentially be the future for Intel PCs and servers”
